An essential element of every garden design
The magnolia in front of the house slowly opens its buds and a delicate pink emerges from the velour-like gray. Corylopsis is blooming. Tulips bravely move towards the sun. Bumblebees rummage through crocuses. Early spring this year, but so long-awaited after months of rain and greyness!
Spring colors are probably the most pleasing...
In our opinion, vivid spring (and not only spring) colors require an appropriate background. And this is where conifers enter the scene, e.g. the immortal and universal Thuja and Taxus, which are still available at us. The bright yellow flowers of our Corylopsis look amazing against the dark, deep green of the Taxus hedge. A lighter greenery of Thuja, e.g. King of Brabant or Smaragd, will blend beautifully with yellow-leafed Spiraea japonica varieties and will highlight the white flowers of Viburnum plicatum or the pastel colors of Potentilla flowers.
Thuja Sunny Smaragd will look amazing with plants with purple/dark pink flowers or dark leaves, which will shine even more against the background of the vivid, sunny yellow of the needles.
And we can do this for a long time. There are endless possibilities for combining conifers (which some people consider boring) with deciduous shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses. Conifers are not only evergreen hedges that protect us from noise and prying eyes but are an essential element of every garden design. They are a background for other plants, bringing out their shapes and colors. Especially now, in early spring.
