Soft fruit - pure pleasure

Due to recent changes in our offer (some plants have returned), we again have a wide selection of strawberry and blueberry varieties.

As always, we are looking for plant characteristics that have a beneficial effect on our health. For fruit, it's quite easy.
For example, strawberries are a great source of vitamins A, C, E, and B vitamins, they contain macro- and microelements. They strengthen our bones and improve muscle performance. They are low in calories, so they are a safe dessert for everyone who cares about the line (of course, adding sugar and whipped cream drastically increases the number of calories ;)). Strawberries also contain phytoncides (we wrote about them on Friday) that support us in the fight against infections.

At the moment we have strawberries available in P9 for 0.75€:
  • Fragaria a. 'Elsanta'
  • Fragaria a. 'Lambada'
  • Fragaria a. 'Malling Centenary'
  • Fragaria a. 'Mieze Schindler'
  • Fragaria a. 'Ostara'
  • Fragaria a. 'Renaissance'
  • Fragaria a. 'Sonata'
Strawberries can grow also in containers on terraces and balconies. The best varieties for such cultivation are Selva, Estara, Super Star, Everest, or Ostara.
Interesting fact:
Strawberry, as we know it and like, is a work of man – they don’t occur wild in nature. Strawberries were created in the 17th century from the crossing of two wild strawberries: Chilean and Virginia.
American blueberries, which we also wrote about recently, have a positive effect on the whole organism, improve eyesight, help lower cholesterol, and prevent disease (cancer). They contain the necessary micro and macro elements, such as calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. They are not very caloric, so they can be eaten by people who try to lose weight. The fruit tastes delicious as fresh or as an addition to desserts (ice cream, cakes, cocktails) and in the form of jams.

Pay attention to the varieties:
  • Vaccinium cor. 'Duke' in C2 at 2,00€ - according to specialists, it's one of the best early fruiting varieties - we can enjoy fresh fruit in mid-July.
  • Vaccinium cor. 'Flamingo® - with its beautiful, pink spotted leaves. Flamingo is "a child" of Bluecrop so we can be sure of good fruiting.
  • Vaccinium cor. 'Liberty'® - NEW! It has nice, tasty, and firm fruit. They can be collected mechanically and stored for a long time. 'Liberty' is very fruitful. It's frost resistant to –37 °C, and its buds are resistant to spring frosts.
  • Vaccinium cor. 'Northcountry' - perfect for containers on a terrasse or balcony, because grows to the max. 1 m of height and width. Extremely hardy - zone 4
While I was writing this newsletter, I got to know that we are repotting the following varieties to C2 and they will be available in the season 2020-2021:
  • Vaccinium cor. 'Pink Popcorn'® - has medium-sized, tasty pink fruit. In autumn, the leaves turn crimson.
  • Vaccinium cor. 'Sweetheart' - gives us 2 crops per year. The first heavy yield in July, and the second, lighter, at the turn of August and September.
  • Vaccinium crop. 'Razz' - has delicious fruit! Sweet, juicy, with a delicate raspberry aroma. In autumn, the leaves turn orange.
