Contrasts attract attention...
arouse admiration, build the atmosphere, add character, and emphasize what we want to emphasize.
Today's topic is plants of the same species, but very contrasting ones.
One group is Sambucus nigra, which is still available in several varieties - three with dark, almost black leaves and one that contrasts strongly with them. Here they are:
- Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace'PBR with delicate, lacy, very dark, and shiny leaves, against which light pink inflorescences up to 20 cm in diameter look beautiful. It grows to about 3 m in height.
- Sambucus nigra 'Black Tower'PBR with leaves typical of the species, but very narrow shape - only 1 m wide and 2-3 m high. Young leaves are green, but quickly acquire a dark, deep color that lasts until autumn. Pink-white flowers. Can grow in containers.
- Sambucus nigra 'Laced Up' PBR is another dark-leaved variety with pinnate, delicate leaves and a columnar, narrow shape up to about 1 m wide and 3 m high. It blooms pink.
- Sambucus nigra 'Golden Spark'® is a contrasting brother of the previously mentioned varieties with green leaves with a clear, irregular yellow edge (the edge changes to a creamier color during the season). It blooms white.
All these colorful varieties grow well in average garden soil and develop their most beautiful colors in sunny positions.
Another family full of contrasts is Physocarpus. Currently, the selection of varieties is limited, but still sufficient to create eye-catching compositions.
Varieties with dark leaves include:
- Physocarpus opulif. 'Little Joker'® - a miniature variety with small, very dark leaves and numerous pink flowers. Perfect for low borders, and containers. It grows to about 50 cm in height.
- Physocarpus opulif. 'Spicy Devil'™ is slightly larger than its predecessor (it grows to about 120 cm) and has leaves in fiery colors of orange, yellow, and reddish-purple. An amazing combination!
- Among stronger growing varieties with dark leaves, we recommend Physocarpus opulif. 'Red Baron' and Physocarpus opulif. 'Schuch'.
- And for contrast, let's have Physocarpus opulif. 'Nugget' or Physocarpus opulif. 'Lucky Devil'™, which retains its vivid yellow color perfectly even in sunny positions, and in autumn it changes color to warm, orange shades.
