Make gardens beauty all year round

We're slowly preparing tables for the Christmas dinner and we're already thinking about the coming year. That's why we offer a set of plants that give their variable beauty from early spring to the next Christmas.

We start with Hamamelis (known as Winterbloom or Witch hazel), then Cytisus (brooms), Diervilla (Bush-honeysuckle), Hydrangea and a new variety of Pyracantha - Red Star
® (Firethorn).

Hamamelis - Winterbloom / Witch hazel

It's easy to find information about Hamamelis' requirements and decorative aspects. It's a unique plant because of the flowering in winter and spectacular autumn colors.
However, we rarely remember that specifics made of its bark and leaves are used in medicine and cosmetology. And hardly anyone knows where the English name of this plant came from - witch hazel.

One explanation is the "magic" way of spreading seeds. They shoot with a loud bang a few meters from the plant.

Another, more likely explanation, refers to the specific attributes of witch hazel shoots. The Mohegans are believed to show English settlers how to use Y-shaped witch hazel sticks for finding underground water. In fact, the name witch hazel is believed to have come from the Middle English "wicke" for "lively" - the dowsing stick bends toward the ground when water is detected below. "Wych" is an old Anglo-Saxon word for "bend". So it means that Hamamelis' shots are "lively bending".

In the offer, we still have a few varieties in P9 at price 3,50€:
Diane, Jelena, Orange Beauty, Pallida.

Cytisus - brooms

The explanation of the English name Cytisus - brooms, is very simple. Not only looks like a broom but in the past, it was used as a broom. This time there is no secret.

Cytisus works great on sandy and acidic soil. Near our nursery, in Veluwe, the brooms grow together with the heathers. They are not only beautiful in spring but also a variation on the diet of the animals living there. Cytisus usually grows where other plants have difficulty surviving. They are very well suited for strengthening slopes because of their deep-growing roots. An interesting fact is that the brooms' seeds are extremely durable. They can survive for several dozen years waiting for favorable conditions for germination.
The flowers are attractive to bees.

We offer several beautiful varieties, including 'Goldfinch', a descendant of the oldest two-color 'Andreanus' variety, which was discovered in the 19th century in Normandy.
Plants in P9, at 0,65€ (except licensed 'Red Dragon'
® at 1,10€)

Diervilla - Bush-honeysuckle

Diervilla, named after the French explorer, who traveled in Canada at the end of the 17th century, and brought her to Europe, is a real allrounder. It grows up to about 1.5 m in height. It has clean foliage (depends on the variety: green, yellow or maroon) and sweet, yellow flowers in high summer. It's rhizomatous, fast-growing and very tough. It can take both very cold and hot/dry/sunny conditions in stride as well as a wide range of soil pH. It's an ideal groundcover for difficult locations such as stabilizing a steep or sunny bank. Diervilla attracts bees and butterflies and provides cover for small animals and birds.

The honey-like taste of the flower nectar can be enjoyed by suckling the flower, hence the common name of honeysuckle.

At the moment we still have:
  • Diervilla sessilifolia 'Butterfly' with green leaves P9, at 0,65€
  • Diervilla splendens P9, at 0.60€
In autumn 2020 'Diva'® with burgundy leaves and 'Honeybee'® with yellow leaves will appear in our offer again.

Hydrangea

Hydrangeas do not require an additional description ;) we all know them and I think we all love them. We still have both known and new varieties available.

Of the popular ones:
  • Pinky Winky®
  • Little Lime®
  • Tardiva...
Of the newer varieties:
  • Little Spooky® - dwarf, up to 50 cm tall, with numerous flowers, great for the garden and for containers on the patio or terrace
  • Graffiti® which flowers turn to white-green-pink
  • Skyfall® with hyacinth-shaped flowers...
And a few others - check our list and if you have questions, please contact us.

Remember the 'Runaway Bride'
® which white flowers appear in every leaf corner, not only on the tips of the shoots.

Pyracantha coccinea Red Star®

The gold medalist of GrootGroenPlus 2019 fully deserved this prise as it's one of the most decorative winter plants.

In June, it's besprinkled with white, small flowers. In August, small, initially green berries appear and turn red in September.

Their beautiful, bright and intense color lasts until Christmas, or longer – sometimes even till February, which is a great garden decoration. It can be grown as a solitary or tided onto a framework next to the wall and used as an alternative climber. This firethorn can grow pretty well on the North wall. It will be a beautiful decoration of a balcony or patio when planted into a nice, big pot.
Also important - Red Star
® is more gardener friendly than other firethorns because it has fewer thorns.
  • Fruits appear on 2-year-old shoots so if you want to enjoy the flowers and fruits, remove only single shoots after flowering
  • Red Star is very hardy, even up to -30°C
  • The maximum height is 180 cm
  • Position – sunny or half-shade

Red Star® will be available on offer for the 2020-2021 season - stay tuned
