One of the oldest blooming plants...
Sunny weather, longer and longer days, and bigger, swollen buds on trees and bushes clearly indicate that spring is just around the corner.
Our magnolias outside the window give clear signs that soon they will treat us with the beauty of flowers. Even our youngest in the collection, Magnolia soulangeana, which we planted as P9 two years ago, will have its first flowers.
Interestingly, it is worth knowing that magnolias are among the oldest flowering plants on Earth. They are older than bees! They were on Earth before the ice age and survived where the ice did not reach, i.e. in the east of North America and in eastern Asia (they still occur naturally there today).
Magnolias feel best in places sheltered from the wind, they bloom most beautifully in full sun, but they also do well in semi-shaded places. Leave them space so that they can grow freely and show off their charms in spring (magnolias don't like replanting at a later age). They require permeable, rich, slightly acidic soil, and like regular irrigation.
At the moment we still offer a few varieties:
- Magnolia soulangeana 'Satisfaction' (in C2) - a new variety in the soulangeana group whose nice, compact habit makes it perfect for smaller spaces. Flowers - cream inside and dark pink outside, appear later than in other varieties, which protects them from spring frosts.
- Magnolia 'Ricki' is another, slightly later blooming variety with large, slender flowers in various shades of pink. It blooms long and profusely and reaches a small size. (Only 50 plants left!)
- Magnolia 'Winelight' is a cultivar with flowers up to 20 cm high, purple-red, and with time they become brighter on the tops of tepals. It grows up to about 5 meters. Very pretty and attractive variety. (In C2, only 76 plants!)
