Do we need hedges?
The autumn cleaning in the garden, which involved, among other things, cutting forgotten, and overgrown Taxus hedges (yes, yes, a shoemaker walks without shoes), inspired me to think about "Why do we need hedges?".
I was cleaning up cut shoots, filling big bags and oh well ... I envied the neighbors who were sitting on the terrace in the rays of the autumn sun. But when a tiny robin hidden in the branches of a hedge "chattered" next to me again, I remembered that a hedge is a living environment for creatures like this fluffy ball.
Then I remembered more arguments for hedges:
- hedges create cozy, green interiors in the garden, where it's nice to sit down without exposing yourself to the eyes of curious passers-by;
- some plants emit the so-called phytoncides*, i.e. chemical compounds with a beneficial effect on our well-being and health;
- plants effectively suppress noise, absorb dust and dust harmful to our health;
- a natural, plant fence improves the microclimate in our garden - increases air humidity, lowers the temperature on hot days;
- in winter, hedges effectively protect against wind, thanks to which the garden is warmer and we can plant plants that are more sensitive to low temperatures;
- they are a habitat not only for birds but also for insects, hedgehogs, and other small mammals, which is an interesting natural experience and promotes biodiversity.
The hedge makes sense.
Everyone can choose plants to suit their tastes, requirements, expectations, and possibilities. Deciduous (e.g. Cotoneaster lucidus, Cornus alba in varieties, Carpinus betulus, Fagus sylvatica ...) or coniferous (Thuja occidentalis Brabant, King of Brabant, Smaragd, Totem Smaragd, Taxus media Hicksii or Hillii and more).
There are many possibilities! And many inspirations can be found in the attached list.
