We are looking for colors. We walk around the nursery, prepare plants for the changing weather, prepare plants for shipment, prepare the nursery for the coming spring, and... we are looking for colors. Something that will brighten up the somewhat monotonous, and grey landscape. Well, we've got it! Beds with
Photinia, which even now are striking with their leaves. It's nice to think what they will look like in a few weeks, when (we hope) spring will be in full swing in the Netherlands.
In our imagination, we see the bright red, fiery, joyful, and expressive colors of young growths. Photinia experts will argue which variety is the most decorative.
'Carré Rouge' with bright red young growth and creamy white flowers? Or maybe
'Little Red Robin', with fiery red young leaves? And what about
'Red Robin', a stronger growing variety with equally attractive, bright red leaves? The choice is not easy...
Therefore, apart from the decorative aspects of individual Photinia varieties, let's take into account more objective factors, such as growth strength. Thus, 'Red Robin' is suitable
for larger spaces or quite high
hedges (natural or cut), as it has strong, upright shoots and grows up to 3 m high. 'Little Red Robin' reaches only 2 m in height, grows quickly, and has a nice, oval shape. We recommend it for lower hedges, especially since it grows quite quickly (approx. 15 cm per year). 'Carré Rouge', with a slightly slender shape and medium growth (2 m high), is also suitable for growing in
large containers on a terrace or patio.
Photinia likes well-drained, light, and fertile soil, semi-shaded places and sheltered from the wind. In colder parts of the world, it may require winter covering. It is worth remembering that Photinia is not only a beautiful, decorative shrub with amazing, energetic, and eye-catching colors but also a good plant for bees and other pollinators.
