Barberries offer an incredible wealth of forms and colors
They do great on light soils, do not require much care, and give fantastic decorative effects. We like them because they can be cleverly combined to obtain multidimensional and multi-colored compositions.
We can plant them as groundcovers, for low and high hedges, in rock gardens, containers on terraces, and patios. They tolerate pruning perfectly and thicken nicely. In spring, they bloom light yellow and attract pollinating insects.
In summer they are covered with small, red fruits, which birds eagerly eat in winter. And underestimated by us, because, as we read in an old herbal book, barberry fruits are a vitamin C source and contain organic acids and carotenoids. You can make a refreshing jelly from them, or add them to apple or pear preserves. In the Caucasus, barberry fruit, garlic, hot peppers, and herbs are used to make an excellent paste.
So much for the culinary advantages.
