Berberis is still irreplaceable
We are touching upon the autumn theme again, thanks to the autumn views outside the window. No, we are not talking about greyness and rain, but about plants changing colour, among which, especially in urban greenery, Berberis deserves attention. They add colour with each passing day, each day gaining a blush – red, orange… it is hard to take your eyes off them.
The autumn appeal of Berberis is an important argument for these plants. Other arguments include low requirements for soil and care, visual appeal from spring, when they start blooming and the first colourful leaves appearing, throughout the summer, until autumn. In winter, red berries are an attraction (especially for birds which like eating them; we can prepare jellies and marmalades).
Let’s not forget that Berberis can perform many functions. We can plant them as a tall or medium-sized hedge. As ground cover plants, in decorative containers on the terrace or patio, colourful accents of flower beds, in urban plantings in parks and along the streets. They look great everywhere!
For those who like strong accents, we recommend combining varieties in contrasting colours, e.g. dark red Berberis thunb. ‘Red DJ’ or Berberis thunb. ‘Dart’s Red Lady’ and yellow-leaved Berberis thunb. Limoncello™ ‘BailErin’ or Berberis thunb. ‘Sunsation’®. The Wow! effect is guaranteed!
For those looking for proven, classic varieties, we have good news. Berberis thunb. ‘Atropurpurea Nana’, Berberis thunb. ‘Green Carpet’, Berberis thunb. ‘Orange Ice’®, Berberis thunb. ‘Powwow’ and others are still available.
