What are grasses?

‘Grasses’ refers to both true grasses and plants that have a grass-like appearance, such as sedges, that are used for similar purposes in gardens (ornamental grasses). Most ornamental grasses are perennials, living for two or more years.

Ornamental grasses are used for its special decorative value. Examples of ornamental grasses are various types of Miscanthus, Cortaderia, Carex, Molinia, Festuca, Panicum, Pennisetum and Stipa. We have the beautiful Carex flagellifera Bronzita™ available, a beautiful garden appearance.

Types of grasses

Grasses have growth habits that are either clumping or spreading. Spreading grasses expand rapidly by aboveground or underground stems. Clumping or bunch grasses grow in a clump that gradually increase in diameter.

Because grasses are such a varied group, they can be incorporated for many different landscape purposes. Grasses with a striking-growth habit, foliage color, or flowers can be used as accent plants. They may be used in perennial borders and in container plantings. In mass, some grasses can stabilize hillside soils for erosion control.

Ornamental varieties

Ornamental grass varieties combined with other flowering perennials or flowering shrubs create a nice contrast and excellent colors. Well-known ornamental grasses are the fescue plants. This ornamental grass is an evergreen that is very tolerant of a wide range of sites and conditions. This plant is one of the “no fuss” plants, which means low maintenance. Blue fescue plants are evergreen, but they do lose some of the older blades and grow new fresh deep blue leaves in spring. There are several varieties of blue fescue grass for the garden.

The famous Uncinia rubra ‘Everflame’ has colorful brown-yellow striped leaves that also retain their beautiful color in winter. Uncinia prefers a sheltered, warm spot in the sun or partial shade in a moist, water-permeable soil and makes few demands on the soil type.
