Evergreen plants to color the gray autumn days
The grayer outside the window is and the more leaves I see on the ground, not on the trees, the more I look towards evergreen plants. In our offer, we’ve got them quite a lot. Today, another episode about the less popular plants decorative in winter.
Read and choose something for yourself and your customers.
Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Niger’
It’s an evergreen perennial but looks a bit like an ornamental grass. It has numerous narrow, dark purple leaves and creates low clumps (up to 40 cm high). From July to September appear small, fragrant, purple-white, bell-shaped flowers gathered in clusters. This perennial is suitable for hardiness zone 6. In colder regions requires winter cover.
It’s not high demanding regarding growing conditions. Prefers sunny or semi-shaded positions that allow keeping the intense, dark color of leaves. Plant your Ophiopogon in the moist, well-drained, humic substrates.
Niger makes beautiful groundcovers and interesting color combinations with plants with silver or yellow leaves or flowers. Grows very well on the borders and terrace containers.

Nandina domestica ‘Fire Power’
Nandina domestica ‘Fire Power’ is a small, compact, evergreen dwarf shrub, with a bushy, upright shape. Grows to 40 cm height. It’s great for as a color accent in every garden or in a big pot on a terrace.
The leaves have a high ornamental value and every season surprise with their colors. In the beginning, they are pink-red, then turn to yellow-green in summer and in autumn and winter they get orange and red-purple hues. In the middle of summer, the creamy white, star-shaped flowers appear gathered into panicles. Bright red berries come later.
Nandina likes a place in the sun or partial shade and requires fertile, well-drained soil. The plant is reasonably hardy (to -15° C) and requires little pruning.

Prunus lusitanica ‘Brenelia’ PBR
That’s a new variety of Portuguese laurel. ‘Brenelia’ is an evergreen, compact plant with leathery, large and elongated leaves with the intensively red petioles. In May-June white flowers gathered in candle-shaped clusters appear and later on small, red-purple berries (not edible for us but birds like them).
‘Brenelia’ grows more upright than the other Prunus lusitanica. Looks great as a solitary plant and as a hedge.
It’s resistance against diseases and is drought tolerant. It also tolerates higher ground humidity well (important in a wet climate).
You can plant your ‘Brenelia’ in a sunny or semi-shade place in well-drained soil. It’s hardy to -15°C. We recommend planting in a place covered against winter winds.
‘Brenelia’ grows a maximum of 5 m height and 2-3 m wide. You can prune it in June-August but do it carefully, not to damage the leaves.
Prunus lusitanica ‘Brenelia’ P9, price 1,40€
Pyracantha coccinea Red Star
The gold medalist of GrootGroenPlus 2019 fully deserved this prise as it’s one of the most decorative winter plants.
In June, it’s besprinkled with white, small flowers. In August, small, initially green berries appear and turn red in September.
Their beautiful, bright and intense color lasts until Christmas, or longer – sometimes even till February, which is a great garden decoration. It can be grown as a solitary or tided onto a framework next to the wall and used as an alternative climber. This firethorn can grow pretty well on the North wall. It will be a beautiful decoration of a balcony or patio when planted into a nice, big pot.
Also important – Red Star is more gardener friendly than other firethorns because it has fewer thorns.
- Fruits appear on 2-year-old shoots so if you want to enjoy the flowers and fruits, remove only single shoots after flowering
- Red Star is very hardy, even up to -30°C
- The maximum height is 180 cm
- Position – sunny or half-shade

How should I make my order?
Complete the “order” column in the attached Excel file and send it to info@hoogenraadplant.nl. Do not change the content of the file, just enter the number of plants ordered. In the email, provide the company name, contact details and the expected date of receipt of the order (autumn or spring) – this will help us plan work in the nursery.
When will my order be confirmed?
Every order we receive is confirmed within 48 hours. If during this time you do not receive an email from us, check your “spam” and “offers” or call us.
When can I pick up my order?
We adjust the dates of orders to meet your needs, so report the date of the planned collection in advance – from February to the end of April, 3 weeks earlier, except this period – a minimum of one week. This will facilitate the timely, efficient and correct preparation of plants and their careful packaging.
I’m a new customer, when do I have to pay?
We accept cash payments or bank transfers to our bank account based on a pro forma invoice before picking up your order. Pre-payment includes 100% of the order value.
