Paeonia suffruticosa – Tree peony
Asian “queen of flowers”, a symbol of honor, wealth, aristocracy, love, affection and feminine beauty, is an indispensable element of gardens arranged in the Japanese style (not only, of course). In May and June, it impresses with flowers that reach a diameter of 15-25 cm depending on the variety. Typically, it grows to about 1-1.5 m in height and similar in width. It can be planted singly or in groups. Suitable for zone 6.

Cultivation tips:
- choose a sunny position, possibly slightly shaded (in the sun blooms more profusely), where it will be able to stay for years because it doesn’t like to be replanted;
- tree peony likes the soil fertile, loamy, but permeable;
- before planting, check the soil pH – the optimum is neutral or slightly alkaline;
- plant the young plants 10-15 cm deeper than they grow in the container, cover the base of the plant with bark;
- water regularly, because it needs a lot of water;
- the first flowers may appear only after 2-3 years, so be patient;
- in the spring, cut dead shoots, in the summer remove decayed flowers so that the plant doesn’t lose energy to produce seeds;
- regularly use fertilizers, preferably with a higher content of potassium and phosphorus than nitrogen, which will be conducive to abundant flowering.
