Waldsteinia
Waldsteinia ternata is known as barren strawberry. Not by chance! The leaves are lobed, dark green, like those of a strawberry. It gives beautiful, red berries, very decorative but tasteless (barren means sterile, unproductive). I confirm that with my own experience – they taste like… hmmm… nothing.
Waldsteinia is an ideal plant for ground cover in shady places, being evergreen and having a carpeting habit. That’s a great solution if your customers complain that “nothing grows under trees”. Propose them Waldsteinia. Additionally to evergreen leaves, in May/June they will enjoy yellow, numerous, saucer-shaped flowers.
It’s worth to mention that Waldsteinia is native to Siberia so it’s ultra-hardy, pest and disease resistant. Suitable to zone 3, that means -30˚C!
Waldsteinia grows to 20 cm heights and 60 cm wide. To get equal coverage, plant 16 plants/1m2. It’s perfect for shady places but does very well in sunny ones with moist soil.
The Latin name of this plant was given to honor the Austrian count, botanist, and writer Franz von Waldstein-Wartenberg who lived at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Waldsteinia ternata is available in P9 at the price of 0,60€

Thuja occ. Sunny Smaragd
Thuja occidentalis Sunny Smaragd (‘Hoogi023’PBR) is very special among other yellow thuyas. It’s not only a sunny color which makes it different.
Sunny Smaragd can grow in full sun, and yet it doesn’t suffer from sunburn so typical for other colored thuyas. Even if it grows in partial shade will dye to its beautiful warm color. Young growths have a slightly orange color. In the wintertime retains its unique color, much better than other similar varieties. If you plant Sunny Smaragd in a decorative pot on the terrace you will get a real decoration, because it doesn’t get brown, like many others. It can also be planted as a hedge. After 10 years, it reaches 2-2.5 m high. Frost resistant, suitable to zone 5b.
Thuja occ. Sunny Smaragd is available in:
– C2 at the price of 2,50€ (only 240 plants left!)
– P9 at the price of 1,00€
Picea glauca Conica
Picea glauca ‘Conica’ is a dwarf variety of white spruce which is a state plant of South Dakota in the USA (and grows to 20 m height!). ‘Conica’ was found in the Canadian mountains near Lake Laggan in 1904. The discovery was made by two dendrologists from the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard: Alfred Rehder and John Georg Jack.
‘Conica’ grows annually about 9 cm, and after 10 years it reaches only 1 m in height. 30-year-old specimens reach a height of 3.5 m and 1.5 m in diameter. Young growths appear in spring in May and summer in June. Then the plant looks most beautiful, covered with soft, lush green needles.
It fully winters and is suitable for zone 5a.
Picea glauca Conica is available in P9 at the price of 0,75€
Picea glauca Conica SPEEDY is available in P9 at the price of 0,85€
