Cultivation tips:
- Plant magnolia in light, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 5-6) with equal moisture throughout the year.
- Find a place where it will live forever and ever because it doesn’t like transplanting. Cover the soil with a bark mulch and don’t plant anything else around (especially after a few years).
- Choose places sheltered against the cold wind, because the magnolia sets flower buds in late summer, so it is important to protect them from the cold.
- Regularly hydrate, also in autumn, if it is dry, to avoid drying buds.
- Regularly perform fertilizing, do not use fertilizers with calcium, because calcium increases soil pH which is disadvantageous for magnolia.
Magnolias are among the oldest flowering plants they were already in the Tertiary (more than 90 million years ago!) when there were not even bees on Earth and pollination mainly concerned beetles. The entire northern hemisphere was covered with forests of ambrowts, tulip trees, ginkgo trees, and magnolias, which were brought to an end by glaciation. They survived only where the ice did not reach, that is, in the east of North America and in East Asia, where wild magnolias are still found today.
Formerly planted near residences and palaces, they were considered a sign of prestige. Currently, we know about 250 species of magnolia, and some of them we see in home gardens.
