Red that always delivers: Berberis thunbergii in full colour focus

As we head into the final weeks of the year, deep reds are everywhere: from winter fashion to interior trends for 2025–2026, where warm, saturated red tones dominate the palette. It’s the colour of the season, and a perennial favourite in the landscape. This week, we’re highlighting four standout red Berberis thunbergii varieties from our assortment. Each brings its own shade, habit, and production advantages, giving growers plenty of options when planning a strong, colour-driven range for the coming season.

Berberis thunb. ‘Red DJ’: vivid, energetic, and reliable
A modern red selection with powerful foliage colour from early spring onwards. ‘Red DJ’ delivers a bright, saturated red tone that holds well through the season, supported by compact growth and strong branching. Excellent for growers looking for a bold, eye-catching variety with consistent production quality. Available in P9 and C2.

Why growers choose it:

Berberis thunb. ‘Red Pillar’®: vertical structure in deep burgundy
‘Red Pillar’® is the go-to choice for vertical accents. Its narrow, upright habit fits effortlessly into small gardens and modern designs, while the foliage shifts from deep burgundy to fiery red tones in autumn. This makes it a versatile red statement plant for growers building structured ranges. Available in P9.

Why growers choose it:

Berberis thunb. ‘Dart’s Red Lady’: elegance with multi-season appeal
A classic in the red Berberis segment, ‘Dart’s Red Lady’ combines arching stems with deep red to purple foliage that intensifies through the season. Strong garden performance and proven reliability make it a staple for many growers. Available in P9.

Why growers choose it:

Berberis thunb. ‘Red Compact’®: compact plant, bold colour
As the name promises, ‘Red Compact’® offers a tight, rounded habit with a wonderfully rich red leaf tone. Ideal for borders, mass plantings, or containers, this cultivar is prized for its uniformity and easy production. Available in P9.

FAQ:

How should I make my order?

Complete the “order” column in the attached Excel file and send it to info@hoogenraadplant.nl. Do not change the content of the file, just enter the number of plants ordered. In the email, provide the company name, contact details, and the expected date of receipt of the order – this will help us plan work in the nursery.

When will my order be confirmed?

Every order we receive is confirmed within 48 hours (working days). If during this time you do not receive an email from us, check your “spam” and “offers” or call us.

When can I pick up my order?

We adjust the dates of orders to meet your needs, so report the date of the planned collection 2 weeks in advance (February-April – 3 weeks in advance). This will facilitate the timely, efficient, and correct preparation of plants and their careful packaging.
Pickup of orders is possible from week 37 (2025) to week 18 (2026).

I’m a new customer, when do I have to pay?

We accept cash payments, credit cards, and bank transfers to our bank account based on a pro forma invoice before picking up your order. Pre-payment includes 100% of the order value. After making the payment, please send us confirmation of the transfer because it accelerates the preparation of the plants for pickup.
