Colour when the garden needs it most 🌿
Autumn has settled in, the days are getting shorter and more and more plants are preparing for winter. That is exactly when evergreen plants start to show their value. They keep structure and colour in the garden throughout the colder months – and some of them already have something special waiting for early spring.
This week, we are putting Camellia in the spotlight.
A classic that never goes out of style – Camellia japonica has been a garden favourite for generations.
Its glossy, dark-green foliage provides year-round structure, while the flowers bring colour at a time when much of the garden is only just beginning to wake up.
From pure white and soft pink to deep red, the colour range is surprisingly broad.
And there is plenty of variation in flower shape too, with single, semi-double and double flowers giving every variety its own character.
From white to deep red
Looking for something soft and elegant?
Camellia japonica ‘Matterhorn’ produces pure white flowers, while ‘Brushfield’s Yellow’ combines creamy-white petals with a pale yellow centre.
‘Bonomiana’ brings something different with white-pink flowers marked by red stripes.
For stronger colours, there is ‘Dr. King’ with light red flowers and ‘Kramer’s Supreme’ with its bright red blooms.
‘Lady Campbell’ also brings rich red colour to the assortment.
And ‘Principessa Baciocchi’ stands out with crimson-red flowers marked with contrasting white stripes.
Colour before spring really begins
One of the strongest qualities of Camellia japonica is its flowering period.
From late winter into spring, its flowers appear while many other garden plants are still dormant.
Combined with evergreen foliage, this makes Camellia a valuable choice for borders, gardens and sheltered patios throughout the year.
For the best results, Camellias prefer a sheltered position in partial shade, together with moist, well-drained and acidic soil.
And then there is ‘Mary Williams’
Camellia reticulata ‘Mary Williams’ deserves a little extra attention.
Its large, single, rose-pink flowers can grow to more than 12.5 cm across, creating an impressive display towards the end of winter and into spring.
Large flowers, fresh colour and evergreen foliage – just when the garden can use it most.
Like Camellia japonica, ‘Mary Williams’ performs best in a sheltered position with partial shade and moist, well-drained, acidic soil.
Evergreen structure, followed by spring colour
That combination is exactly what makes Camellia so attractive.
While much of the garden rests through winter, its glossy foliage keeps providing structure.
And before long, the flowers take over.
From elegant white to pink, striped and deep red varieties, Camellia offers plenty of ways to bring colour into the garden at the start of a new growing season.

When can I pick up my order?
